10 Digital Marketing Strategies to Grow Your Business Online

Starting an online business is super exciting, but lets be honest—it can also be really overwhelming! When I first started trying to promote my small shop online, I had no idea what I was doing. There was so many terms like “SEO”, “PPC”, and “algorithms” being thrown around that my head was spinning.

If you feel stuck or don’t know where to start, don’t worry! You don’t need a huge budget or a master degree in marketing to get customers online. Here is a list of 10 simple digital marketing strategies that actually work to grow your business online, explained in plain english.

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Getting Found on Google

SEO sounds complicated, but all it really means is making your website easy for search engines like Google to understand. When people search for products or services like yours, you want your website to show up on teh first page!

To start with SEO, think about what exact words your target customers are typing into Google. These are called “keywords”. For example, if you sell handmade candles in Chicago, your keywords might be “handmade soy candles Chicago”. Put those words in your website headings, page descriptions, and product titles.

Beginner Tip: Don’t try to trick Google by repeating the same word 100 times. Google is really smart nowadays! Just write helpful content for real people.

2. Social Media Marketing – Building a Real Community

Almost everyone is on social media today, whether its Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, or LinkedIn. But a big mistake alot of beginners make is trying to be on every single platform at once. It gets exhausting real quick!

Instead, pick just one or two platforms where your potential customers hang out the most. If you sell pretty visual items or clothing, Instagram or TikTok is great. If you do B2B (business-to-business) services, LinkedIn is much better.

Show behind-the-scenes videos, answer customer questions, and talk with people instead of just dumping sales links on them.

3. Content Marketing & Blogging – Teaching Instead of Preaching

Content marketing is just a fancy way of saying “creating useful stuff for free”. This could be blog posts, quick video guides, or helpful tips graphics.

When you share free advice on your blog or website, people start to trust you. For instance, if you run a plant nursery, you could write a simple blog titled “5 Easy Ways to Keep Your Houseplants Alive in Winter”. People searching for plant advice will find your post, see that you know your stuff, and buy plants from you later!

  • Why it works: Content builds trust, and trust turns visitors into paying customers.
  • How often to post: Aim for just one quality blog post every week or two. Consistency is key!

4. Email Marketing – Your Most Loyal Sales Channel

Out of all the marketing channels out there, email marketing still gives you the best return on your money! Why? Because you actually own your email list. Social media algorithms can change overnight and hide your posts, but your email subscribers will always get your messages right in their inbox.

To get people to sign up for your emails, offer them a little freebie or incentive. You can give a 10% discount code, a free downloadable PDF checklist, or early access to new sales.

5. Pay-Per-Click Advertising (PPC) – Fast Traffic on Demand

If SEO is like planting a garden (takes time to grow), PPC ads are like buying veggies from the supermarket (instant results!). With Pay-Per-Click ads—like Google Ads or Facebook Ads—you pay a small fee every time someone clicks on your advertisement.

The best part about Google Ads is that you can target people who are actively looking to buy right now. If someone types “emergency plumber near me,” they need a plumber immediately! Setting up a small daily budget of $5 or $10 is a great way to test out ads without blowing your savings.

6. Local SEO & Google Business Profile

If your buisness serves a local area (like a bakery, coffee shop, or lawn care company), Local SEO is your absolute best friend! Have you ever searched for “coffee shop near me” on your phone? Those map results that pop up at the top of Google are powered by Google Business Profiles.

It is 100% free to set up your Google Business Profile. Make sure you:

  • Fill out your exact address, business hours, and phone number.
  • Upload clear photos of your store, products, or team.
  • Gently ask happy customers to leave a 5-star review.

7. Working with Micro-Influencers

When beginners think of “influencer marketing”, they think of paying celebrities thousands of dollars for a single picture. But you don’t need famous celebrities! Instead, look for micro-influencers—creators who have between 1,000 and 10,000 followers.

Micro-influencers usually have very high engagement because thier followers trust them like a friend. Many micro-influencers are super happy to review your product in exchange for a free sample or a small fee. It’s an affordable way to get your brand in front of thousands of niche buyers!

8. Affiliate Marketing – Pay Only for Real Sales

Affiliate marketing is where you partner with other bloggers, creators, or websites who recommend your products to their audience. In exchange, you pay them a small commission percentage whenever someone makes a purchase using thier unique referral link.

This strategy is amazing for small businesses because it is zero risk! You don’t pay anything upfront; you only pay when an actual sale happens.

9. Chatbots & Interactive Support

Have you ever visited a website and had a quick question, but couldn’t find an answer so you just left? That happens to prospective buyers all the time!

Adding a simple live chat or AI chatbot widget on your website can help answer common questions 24/7. They can help visitors find the right product size, check shipping costs, or book a consultation call even while you are asleep. It improves the customer experience and stops people from leaving your site.

10. Reviews & Word-of-Mouth Marketing

At the end of the day, no ad is more powerful than a recommendation from a happy customer. Social proof is everything online! When someone visits your site for the first time, they want to see that other people have bought from you and had a good experience.

Showcase your best customer reviews right on your homepage or product pages. You can also create a referral program that gives existing customers a discount when they invite a friend to shop with you.

Wrapping It All Up!

Growing your business online doesn’t happen overnight, and you definitely don’t have to do all 10 of these strategies on day one! The best thing you can do right now is just pick two or three strategies that fit your business best—like combining Local SEO, a simple Google Business Profile, and an Instagram account.

Stay consistent, keep testing what works for your unique audience, and don’t be afraid to make a few mistakes along the way. Your online presence will grow faster than you think!
